1. Broker & security

Broker (Mosquitto / cloud IoT) HA or recovery plan documented
TLS + auth enabled; anonymous publish disabled in field profiles
ACL separates vehicle publish from operator subscribe where needed
Clock sync (NTP) required — timestamps must be trustworthy

2. Topics & schemas

Topic hierarchy versioned (`v1/uav/{id}/health`, …)
Payload schema (JSON / protobuf) checked in with examples
Breaking changes require a new major topic version — no silent edits
Heartbeat interval and liveness timeout agreed with ops

3. Ground ops

Dashboard shows link quality, battery, mode, and compute health first
Alert rules pageable; critical alerts not buried in charts
Retention window covers incident replay (hours/days) not minutes only
Export path for logs/CSV for post-flight analysis

4. Failure modes

Vehicle behavior defined when broker unreachable
Backpressure / queue limits prevent SD card death spirals
Duplicate client IDs detected and blocked
Load test: N vehicles × message rate without dropping heartbeats
